Best lip balms for dry lips: accutane/isotretinoin

One of my biggest problems in winter is dry lips. When I was taking isotretinoin (accutane) it was a battle that I seemed to never be able to win. The pain of your lips cracking if you smiled, yawned, ate or talked was horrendous. My lips bled all of the time and it made everything difficult. Therefore, I’ve made a list of the products I tried during my second course of isotretinoin and ranked them to show you which worked best for me and will hopefully help you too!

Nivea Lip Care Essential

This lip balm is described by Nivea as having been especially formulated by Nivea skin care experts to provide everyday care and protection to maintain your lips’ natural softness and smoothness. However, during the course of treatment I found that for some reason this lip balm seemed to make my lips feel drier and less moisturised. Typically, when I tried this lip balm I would have to use a different lip balm shortly afterwards to avoid my lips cracking.

Vaseline Lip Therapy Original

This lip balm is described by Vaseline as protecting and relieving dry and chapped lips, whilst locking in moisture to help keep them healthy. It instantly softens and soothes dry lips and locks in moisture to help lips recover from discomfort. I used this lip balm if I had nothing else available and although it seemed to work somewhat, it was only temporary. After speaking to my dermatologist, she advised me that Vaseline doesn’t actually moisturise or reduce how chapped your lips are, it works as more of a barrier and would be more effective to lock in the moisture from a different lip balm.

Vaseline Lip Therapy Cocoa Butter

This lip balm is described by Vaseline as protecting and relieving dry and chapped lips, whilst locking in moisture to help keep them healthy. It instantly softens and soothes dry lips and locks in moisture to help lips recover from discomfort. I used this lip balm initially at the start of the treatment and it seemed to work well. However, as the dosage increased this product seemed to work less and less. If I had nothing else available this was my go to option and since finishing the treatment I have continued to use this product.

Glossier Balm Dotcom

This lip balm is described by Glossier as a hydrating, long-lasting, multipurpose lip balm and skin salve that’s packed with antioxidants and natural emollients to nourish and repair dry, chafed skin. The dense, waxy texture stays in place to seal in moisture wherever it goes. I opted for the original product which is fragrance free and untinted. It was long lasting and really nice to use. I could also use this on other patches of skin on my face which were dry and flaky and it helped moisturise those areas too. I really like this product and use it regularly even after the treatment finished.

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask Berry

This lip balm is described by Laniege as a leave-on lip mask that soothes and moisturizes for smoother, more supple lips. It comes in a small pot with a plastic mini spatula to apply the product to your lips. This product worked well in moisturising my lips during treatment, however unless you can lie perfectly still on your back the product does tend to come off whilst you sleep which means that the product works less effectively than it typically would.

La Roche Posay Cicaplast Levres

This lip balm is described by La Roche Posay as a repairing barrier balm soothes, protects and rebuilds the epidermis on chapped, cracked and irritated lips and zones, thanks to its formula concentrated up to 5% of soothing and repairing Panthénol, and enriched with MP-Lipids, pro-hydration active ingredient, in a breakthrough highly filmogenic formula, ultra-comfortable and protective. I love this product, it moisturises, it’s easy to use, it’s long lasting. I used this product throughout being on isotretinion and continue to use it now. It was one of the only things that helped when I was on a higher dosage.

Blistex Intensive Moisturiser Daily Care

This lip balm is described by Blistex as a long-lasting daily moisturiser bursting with ingredients to rehydrate your lips. Shea Butter for conditioning, Allantoin for deep-down protection and Camphor for that soothing touch and containing SPF10. I used this lip balm daily along with the La Roche Posay one to help moisturise my lips and avoid them cracking and splitting. This is an excellent daily use lip balm that tackles the problem of dry lips really well.

Blistex Relief Cream

This lip balm is described by Blistex as an easy way to ease cracked and chapped lips. A soothing cream with a conditioning blend of ingredients to bring medicated relief to sore, sorry-looking lips. Working alongside the active ingredients are Camphor to soothe, Lanolin to protect and Peppermint Oil to add a taste of freshness. This was my favourite lip balm when on the higher dosage of isotretinoin as it really rehydrated my lips and stopped them from splitting. As this is identified by Blistex as a treatment cream I would ensure that you use this product carefully and make sure it is right for you.
